Herbie Kane will stay at Liverpool for the forthcoming season after the club ruled out the prospect of him leaving on loan.
What’s the latest?
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are keen to keep the 20-year-old at the club in order to integrate him into the first-team rather than send him out on loan once again, with Rangers and EFL clubs reportedly interested.
It would seem to be a reverse in Liverpool’s stance on the player, who enjoyed a spell on loan at League One Doncaster last season, and looked likely to move away from Anfield once again earlier this summer.
Kane is yet to make a senior appearance for the Reds but the fact he is set for an increased first-team role suggests he is highly-rated by the club staff, who may believe his development would be best advanced by him staying at the club.
Change in approach from top clubs
The policy of keeping the best prospects at the club has also been witnessed at Tottenham and Man City. Mauricio Pochettino has stated in the past that he prefers to give young players experience of being in and around the first-team, whether in training or on matchday.
There is evidence of Pochettino’s statement coming to fruition in recent years, too, with Kyle Walker-Peters, Oliver Skipp and Juan Foyth the most recent academy graduates to appear in the first-team having never gone out on loan.
Likewise, Phil Foden has taken the same path at Man City, as did Brahim Diaz before his departure, and it is possible that Liverpool also view this method as the best way for their youth players to reach their potential.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is their shining success of recent years and the much-fancied Rhian Brewster has already been integrated – as evidenced by his appearance on the bench in two major Champions League fixtures last season, and neither player has spent time out on loan.
Kane has gone out on loan and used the spell to show his quality, which may have led the club to rethink his position and opt to integrate him into the first-team instead.
Liverpool’s stance should be an encouraging sign for the 20-year-old prodigy.
