da casino: Martin O’Neill believes Neil Lennon’s prior experience at Celtic will help the club navigate upcoming European qualifiers, as reported by The Sunday Post.
What’s he said?
O’Neill knows a thing or two about what it takes to be successful in Europe with the Hoops, having guided the club to the UEFA Cup Final back in 2003, as well as giving some European giants a bloody nose at Celtic Park in the UEFA Champions League, making himself a managerial icon in Glasgow.
He now believes the club are well placed to take their place back in the group stages of the big competition because Neil Lennon is in charge.
How does Neil Lennon turn his doubters into believers? The answer lies in the video below…
As quoted by The Sunday Post, he said of the qualifying process and the current Hoops boss:
“He’ll be terrific, I’m sure of it. He knows what the qualifiers are all about, having played in them and having managed in them.
“These games are huge for Celtic, and you know that right away by the pressure that is around them. You sense it, and part of the reason for that is not just about wanting to be on a stage where Celtic belong and where the club feel, rightly, they belong.
“I am not too sure that there is anywhere more special than Celtic Park on those big European nights.
“You thought the roof might come off some nights, and they are very special memories. But the summer is tense because it is all about getting there. And that’s where I think Neil’s experience can be so important.”
The challenge ahead
Celtic’s qualifying campaign kicks off on 9th July away to Bosnian champions FK Sarajevo, which is by no means an easy test especially for a season opener.
The distance, heat and early season rustiness will all play their part in making the fixture more difficult than it should be, before even adding in the pressure that O’Neill alludes to above.

If the Hoops overcome that two leg challenge, there will still be three more rounds of qualifying, each progressively tougher than the last, before Celtic can take their place in the group stage draw.
Lennon may have experience of the process, but that doesn’t necessarily make it easier, especially in the midst of a summer squad rebuild after the departure of Brendan Rodgers.
