da bwin: The world’s top football stars have been gracing La Liga for many years now with Real Madrid and Barcelona boasting what can only be referred to as dream teams, but this summer we have seen some very big players come over to English football.
da pinnacle: A whole host of players who were in the Spanish top flight last season are now playing for Premier League clubs in England, butwhat has attracted the likes of Angel Di Maria, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa to the ‘greatest league in the world?’
Some say the Premier League is the most exciting and entertaining league in the whole world because of how competitive and fast the football is, and the excitement it brings with the title challenges (more so in the last few seasons than others). Whereas some say that the Spanish Premiership is the better league because of the superstars that tend to play over there. However, a lot of these stars have made it over here now, including Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal from Barcelona, Diego Costa from Athletico Madrid to Chelsea, Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona to Chelsea, Filipe Luis from Athletico Madrid to Chelsea, Alex Song from Barcelona to West Ham, Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid to Manchester United and Bojan from Barcelona to Stoke.
So what attracted them all over here then? Cesc came back to London and signed for Chelsea despite saying he would never play for any other top-flight team other than Arsenal, with some people saying it is mainly because of the money offered to him, but I beg to differ. He loves playing football and has the hunger to want to perform at the top of his game week in, week out. He was not getting that chance in Spain, often making appearances from the bench for both club and country, whereas now he is the star in the Chelsea midfield and playing at the top of his game every week.
This is undoubtedly also the case with a lot of other players who have made the move like Alex Song another top class midfielder who ended up having his chances limited and decided to join West Ham on loan, despite claiming offers from clubs competing in the Champions League. Football might have become more and more about money in recent times but there are still a lot of players out there who value the lure of first team football and have the ambition to want to compete for honours with other clubs who have similar ambitions to their own.
And it isn’t just players, either. If you look at Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, you’ve got two world class managers who are both managing in the Premier League speaks volumes of the strength of English football and, with managers like that to play for, many stars are going to want to make the move over here.
All in all I think it is safe to say that there are many players who will always look for the bigger pay cheque in football. Look at Rooney, for example. Every time he spat his dummy out he got a massive pay rise, while the same goes for many a football player in today’s game. But if you look at the bigger picture you can see that the players who are making their way over to English football from the Spanish top flight are already big earners and are attracted to the excitement of a faster and more thrilling type of football, a higher class of manager and a better chance of making a big impact for their new clubs as well as in their own careers.
Some of them will enjoy more success than others – Fernando Torres will tell you that himself – but for some, if not most, players the move will have proved to be a huge success. My conclusion from this sudden influx of La Liga players over in England is that English football is simply a much more attractive prospect at the moment and it will continue to be for a long time to come.
